Susan Jenkins Trip to Tanzania

In March, my husband and I traveled to Tanzania, where we took a 12-day birding and wildlife safari in the northern part of this East African country.  In addition to the expected wildlife (lions, elephants, zebras, and giraffes), we saw wildebeests as they made their migration from the grasslands of the Serengeti toward the Masai Mara area in Kenya.  They are joined by zebras in a symbiotic relationship (the zebras have good eyesight and the wildebeests have a good sense of smell).  Our travels took us from Arusha, near Mt. Kilimanjaro, to the Serengeti plains, the highlands of Ngorongoro volcanic crater, and Tarangire National Park.  We are so glad that we chose a tour company that specializes in birds too.  It was a much fuller and richer experience than if we had taken only a wildlife safari.  Of the 278 total species that I saw, 260 species were “life birds” for me!!  After the safari, we spent another few days on the island of Zanzibar, before heading home through Nairobi and Johannesburg.
